Lauren Conlin joins @jesseweberlive with new details on the Ohio house of horrors case, where 16 children were found living in a feces-filled home. MORE: https://www.newsnationnow.com/crime/Β
"Ever since 16 children ranging in age from one and a half to 18 were allegedly found living inside a 12 by 12 12 foot room inside of the lapidated feces covered house in Hamden, Ohio. Much of the reporting has focused on the background of the young mother in this case Elizabeth Siders. But of course, as we know, Elizabeth Siders isn't the only defendant. She wasn't the only adult who was living in that so-called House of Horrors. No, her husband, Gary Siders Jr., his parents, Gary Siders Sr., Christina Siders, they all live there too. They've all been arrested. They're all facing criminal charges. But now, LA Magazine contributor Lauren Conlon has been doing a deep dive into this case to learn more about the rest of the family. How it was possible for such alleged atrocities to go on for so long and what she found out could change this case. Welcome back, Lauren. Good to see you as always. First, I just got to start with Gary Siders Sr. There's going to be an evaluation about the insanity defense, about competency to stand trial, which by the way is different than insanity. Just if he understands the case against him, he can participate in his own defense. What's going on there? Yes, exactly, Jesse. As you said, these are two separate issues here and a judge has ordered evaluations on both. So one, they are ordering a competency to stand trial evaluation because per Gary Siders Sr.'s attorney, when he was initially arrested and he was arraigned, he had no idea what was going on. He couldn't really identify the judge's role, not even his own lawyer's role. And so as a defendant, you really need to be capable to help with your own defense. And they're not sure that that's going to happen. Additionally, the NGI plea is being explored because he will be evaluated to see if he was possibly mentally incapacitated during the time that this alleged crime occurred. However, it does seem like from what we know so far, this neglect or alleged neglect was ongoing. So we'll see what happens with that. But I mean, Jesse, it does seem like, yeah, he might have some diminished capacity here."

Netanyahu's Odds of Losing Power: 60/40 Dennis Ross gives his odds on whether Israel's October election ends Netanyahu's 17-year hold on power β and why a majority wanting him gone isn't enough. #Netanyahu #IsraeliElection #DennisRoss #Israel #Knesset
"You have Bibi Netanyahu who has been prime minister for every year since 2009 with one year where he wasn't there. He obviously has, he has a base that's strong and is kind of looks at him and is prepared to pretty much accept whatever he says. You have a majority, we'll say it's about 58% consistently that would prefer him not to run again. So majority of the country would prefer him not to run again. But, you know, this is a coalition system. A lot depends upon key parties have to cross the threshold. My own sense is I think it's, you know, there's, I said this before we came on, I think there's about a 60-40 chance that we'll see a change in government. But when the stakes are that high and there's a 40% chance that you won't, you know, we might not see such a change. So there is great polarization in Israel now."
Our state is moving forward as a national leader on climate, despite a federal government that seems hellbent on rolling back every ounce of progress. I appreciate Mayor Wilson and the attendees at the launch of PNW Climate Week today. What's happening in DC isn't stopping us.
"In the face of a federal government that just seems hell bent on rolling back every ounce of progress we have made over the years on addressing climate and then going even further in reverse from there. The good news is Washington State and the state of Seattle, in the face of that, we're not just throwing up our hands and saying that we can do quite the opposite. That more and more of our state is used as a national leader on moving forward despite what we're seeing at the federal level. As discouraging as things are in Washington D.C., that is not stopping us. It's not stopping you. That's why you're all in this room. People look to Washington State as the inspiration of these issues. That's largely due to all the work that so many of you are engaged in. So I just want to say thanks. It's inspiring to be governor of a state where you have a room full of people like this on a beautiful day. This is what they want to talk about. This is what they want to do. This is how they want to change the world. So thanks so much for your support. I really appreciate it."
"What is it about that woman that makes her instantly the most important person in your world?"
"Oracle, change of plan. I'm going after the League of Assassins. Why? What have they got to do with all this? Oh, wait a minute. Penguin had one of the League's assassins imprisoned in the museum. I recognize the insignia. She's a member of Talia's elite guard. I knew it. What is it about that woman person in your world? Talia is not the goal, Barbara. I've uploaded Freeze's unfinished cure. It looks to me like the answer is... Found in Ra's al Ghul's blood. Okay, Bruce, I guess you need to go after him. Don't let her get in the way again."
The Smartest Way to Build Black Wealth? Together! π°π€
"I grew up in South Miami, originally from Jamaica, grew up in the Caribbean, came here at age nine. I left in 1998 and came back in 2020. I came back to New South Florida. I didn't even recognize it. I had to sit there and brickle and figure out where I was going. I've been able to be blessed to meet some amazing human beings here. Amazing relationships. One of the things I consistently heard was, a lot of people in Miami don't work together. I can't tell you how many times I've heard that, right? We're trying to change the game a little bit. This is the most wealth that black folks have had in America in history. I'll tell you right now, once we're together here united, we can do magic together, right?"

someone wrote a song about the United States current government leaders Itβs quite catchy πΆπ΅πΆ
"We have written a song about world leaders. World leaders. We don't understand why everybody hates them so much. Why do you hate them? Why? Why? They have a really hard job. Very hard. The burden of the world is upon their shoulders. All upon their shoulders. And we believe that just for once we should sing them a song to praise their efforts. So many efforts. Efforts. Efforts. Are you ready? I'm ready. Three, two, one. Cunts! I thought that was really good. That was really good. That's gonna change people's perspectives. I really think it is. We've done a good job. We've done a good job."
As is required by her charter, Queensland Minister Amanda Camm has failed to provide progress on the Justice Margaret McMurdo led women's safety taskforce recommendations 2021-22. The Crisafulli govt has now cut $40 million from the domestic violence services budget. #qldpol
"Well in the wake of Ms Armstrong's alleged murder, Queensland's embattled domestic and family violence minister has defended tens of millions of dollars in budget cuts. Amanda Kam today couldn't outline progress on recommendations from a landmark inquiry into keeping women safe. A minister under fire, forced to front up over a funding fall. Firstly, it is tragic what has occurred in Toowoomba. The latest state budget has cut 40 million dollars in funding for the prevention of domestic and family violence. No more excuses, no ifs, no buts, it's indefensible. Amanda Kam claims the money was a temporary allocation to implement recommendations from the landmark Women's Safety and Justice Task Force. That funding and those actions were not frontline. Led by former judge Margaret McMurdo, it made almost 300 recommendations in 2021 and 2022. The task force at this time had very much an ambition that this was an ongoing task for Queensland. 72 have been implemented. As for the remaining. We're on track. We're on track. Ms Kam's charter letter requires her to deliver the recommendations in a timely manner. The last progress update was May 2024, and the minister couldn't provide any deadline for their implementation. It would be really disappointing for us to lose that momentum and bring about the change that's already occurring, but it does require adequate resourcing. Alex Brewster, ABC News."
I support abolishing ICE and replacing it with a new organization that enforces our laws fairly and humanely. #alexandria #arlington #fallschurch #Fairfax #ice video courtesy of Latina Voice Media
"Agree to abolish ICE or we should change the system. We need an immigration system but what ICE has done is unacceptable so we need a new organization. Those people who were brought on, who were not properly vetted, who have violated the laws, they need to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
Take Action: π½ America at 250 is a moment to demand a government that serves the public good β not the war machine. www.mobilize.us/peoplepoweru... #America250 #Peoples250
"Right now, Trump and his Republican allies are telling working families to accept less. Less health care, food assistance, housing support, climate action. Less help for children, seniors, veterans, students and people just trying to survive. But somehow, there is always more money for war. Congress is now considering the National Defense Authorization Act, a massive war that would help push total military spending toward a staggering $1.5 trillion for 2027. A government that can fund bombs should fund health care. A country that can enrich defense contractors should feed children. A Congress that can find billions for war should find the courage to protect seniors, house families, lower prescription drug costs, strengthen public schools and keep people alive. America does not need another blank check for a war no one wanted. America needs leaders with the moral courage to invest in life, dignity, freedom and the people who make this country possible."
Martin Hurson died on Hunger Strike 45 years ago today. His brother Brendan recalls one of his last visits with Martin in the prison cell he died.
"I remember on one occasion I was in here and I chatted to him and talked to him about the hunger strike and did he know what was, you know, people died on hunger strikes you know and did he know what he said, he knew what he was doing and anybody didn't want any member of the family in to change his mind or take him off it and he wanted that guarantee. So that's the way it was, we were stuck by him to the end. He was happy enough, he knew what he was doing, he was content with what was going on like, you know, everything was no problem to him. He knew exactly what he was doing, he was determined to do what he wanted to do, he said that there was a lot of five other prisoners had died, he knew what was ahead of him but he said that there was no way that they were given in in any way, that it was their struggle and the treatment that they got from the coming to the prison and the treatment by the, that you see at the courthouses and all this like, you know, there's no way that they weren't given in or they had stood there on that ground and there was no way they were given in and we left that particular day and I remember saying like, well hopefully we'll see you again very soon but that was my last day to see Martin."

"A man died last night because you lost your way. You bet I did. You saw the x-ray. The guy had two hearts. And now without a body or without records... We've met before. Uh, I don't think so. Jesus, I think so. I know you. I remember. I was with Pacini before he died. Name drop. I was. I was. I was. Shh. He died before he could finish Turandot. Alfano finished it based on his notes. It was so sad. You have two hearts. Who are you? I was dead too long this time. The anesthetic almost destroyed the regenerative process. What do you remember? A meteor storm that the sky above us was dancing with lights. Purple, green, brilliant, yellow, yes. What? These shoes. They fit perfectly. I know who I am. Oh. I am the Doctor. Uh, who are you really? By midnight tonight this planet will be pulled inside out. Jenny, baby officer? Now would you stand aside before I shoot myself? Doctor? Yes? I only have one life. Can you remember that? That's a warning. The TARDIS is dying. I never liked this planet, Doctor. Well, that's good because any minute now it shall cease to exist. So, let's see where we are. Where? The future. Wow. Right. Where to next? Can anybody hear me? Please take the nature of your ailment or injury. I'm not injured. I'm crashing. I'm trying to send a distress signal. Stop talking about doctors. I'm a doctor, but probably not the one you're expecting. This is TARDIS. You're desperately perfectly safe, I promise you. Don't touch me! We restored you to life, but it's a temporary measure. You have a little under four minutes. Four minutes? As ages. What if I get bored? I need a television, a couple of books, anyone but chess. Bring me knitting. The war between the Daleks and the Time Lords threatens all reality. You are the only hope left. It's not my war. I help where I can. I will not fight. But our elixir can trigger your regeneration. The change doesn't have to be random. I don't suppose there's any need for a doctor anymore. Make me a warrior now."
Two more people have been shot and killed by ICE this week. Here is what we are going to do about it.
"I'm here in the airport about to fly back to Washington and ICE agents have murdered two people in American cities in just the last few days, one in Texas and one in Maine. So much for all of these claims that they are going to be, quote, turning down the temperature, acting differently now that Kristi Noem has been fired and replaced. They're not. It's just more of the same. In Texas, the agents apparently killed the wrong person and weren't wearing body cameras. We don't know much yet about what happened in Maine, but preliminary reports are that the person who was shot and killed was legally authorized to be here in the United States. ICE continues to act in a completely reckless and out of control and dangerous manner. The question that people are rightfully asking is what are Democrats going to do about it? Well, earlier this year, we had a multi-month government shutdown because we would not vote for any funding unless it included ICE reforms. That ended when the Republicans forced a party line vote. Next year, when we are hopefully in the majority and we control Congress, we will be able to do something about it. We will be able to deny funding to any rogue agency until and unless there are real reforms. What is happening is unacceptable. We can't be quiet about it. We can't be complacent about it. And we have to continue to fight at every turn until there is real change so that people in America can be safe."
THIS WEDNESDAY: Discussing Antifascist Dad: Urgent Conversations with Young People in Chaotic Times with my friend @sararosecaplan.bsky.social @cavershambooks.bsky.social Booksellers, 262 B Geary Ave, Toronto, ON M6H 2C5. 7-9pm. There will be time for questions!
"Hello, everybody. If you are in Toronto or close by, I'll be at Caversham Booksellers this Wednesday evening to talk about my new book, Anti-Fascist Dad, and I'll be joined on stage by my good friend, Sarah Rose Kaplan, who will be asking me questions. It runs from 7 to 9 p.m. The address is in the caption. It's no longer on Harvard Street, which is where I bought my first psychology and religious studies textbooks in 1988. We're also going to try to live stream this as well right here on Instagram. Sarah is a great philosopher who challenges me and cracks me up, and we've decided on this flow of topics. So first, I've been working on spirituality for six years. Is this a change in direction? Why did I write this book? Who did I write it for? It seems very ambitious. It also seems like there are several different pathways for understanding fascism, and a lot of them are crappy, but one of them is really good. Is Mark Carney a strong man? Aren't the kids these days lost to social media and screens? And you approach the contentious subject of pornography in this chapter through the lens of Marxism. How does that go? And finally, you end the book with a suggestion that some kind of spirituality might be a good tool for anti-fascist resilience. So that's what we're going to be chatting about. I'm really glad that Sarah's going to be there because I haven't done a public event since COVID started. I haven't even really been in public much, so I'm a little bit terrified, but Sarah thinks I'm going to do great. So the details are in the caption, and I hope to see you there."
Consumer News: July 13, 2026 Moana struggling in an otherwise hot box office climate. Twelve states sue to block the Paramount acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery. Plus, the bipartisan housing affordability bill becomes law. #Moana #Boxoffice #Paramount #Warner #Housing
"It's been a huge year at the box office, but the live action Moana didn't exactly manage to cash in on it. The film, which cost a reported $250 million to make, debuted with just $43 million over the weekend. 12 states filed a lawsuit this week to block Paramount's pending acquisition of Warner Brothers discovery. The anti trust lawsuit kicks off a high stakes battle that could disrupt the media merger. California's attorney general said the would, quote, lead to higher prices, lower quality and less content for film and television. Unquote Paramount says it will be better positioned to compete with larger companies and generate premium content and the bipartisan housing affordability bill officially became law over the weekend. That's despite a series of attempts by President Donald Trump to stall the 21st century Road to Housing Act. The president refused to sign it but did not veto it. And now the bill has become law for consumer news. I'm Charlie psychiatrist."
