πŸ“Š Most Viewed Bills in Congress | Week of July 6th Housing, election procedures, crypto regulation, defense policy, online protections for minors, compounding pharmacies, and more. Here are the Neuts. πŸ‘‡

🎀 Transcript (en) ⏱ 115s

"These were some of Congress's most viewed measures last week. Here are the newts. Starting us off, a bill tightening federal oversight of compounding pharmacies, which create customized medications for individual patients, as well as outsourcing facilities. Next is a broad housing policy law that recently became law under the Constitution's 10-day provision. It includes changes related to affordable housing development, manufactured housing, mortgage programs, housing assistance, homelessness initiatives, community investment, and housing oversight. Two versions of the Save America Act made the list again. They would require documentary proof of citizenship to register for federal elections and photo ID to vote. Congressional leadership has stated they do not currently have the votes to advance consideration of the policy. Also making the list again is a bill establishing a regulatory framework for digital commodities such as cryptocurrency. Two National Defense Authorization Acts made the list. One is the active version for the upcoming fiscal year. It sets policies and authorizes funding for Department of Defense programs, military construction, and Department of Energy national security activities, while updating military personnel, acquisitions, cyber security, artificial intelligence, foreign partnerships, and defense infrastructure policies. The other is a proposed policy for last year's authorization for the current fiscal year. Next, a bill requiring covered online platforms to implement safeguards for users under 17. These would include protections for data, parental controls, harm reporting tools, limits on certain research involving minors, and greater transparency and choice over recommendation algorithms. Finally, the reconciliation package enacted last summer, covering a wide range of federal programs and policy changes. That's your most viewed list from last week. Which bill caught your attention? How is cryptocurrency reshaping politics? Speaking on BBC Radio 4 Today, Eliza Lockhart explains the three ways crypto is becoming politically significant: industry lobbying, crypto-generated wealth funding political campaigns, and its emerging role as a fundraising and mobilisa

🎀 Transcript (en) ⏱ 52s

"At the moment, crypto in the terms of donations made in crypto is relatively small, but we do see crypto becoming politically significant in three main ways. The first is that the crypto industry is a well-resourced sector that's seeking to shape the regulation that governs it. That's not unique to crypto, most industries lobby, but it matters because government decisions that are being made right now are directly affecting the value and the profitability of crypto businesses. The second way it's becoming significant is that crypto has created significant personal wealth, so some individuals who've made their money in crypto are now making large donations to political parties and campaigns and figures. And the third way, and this is not really taken off yet in the UK but we see it in the United States, that crypto itself has become a political fundraising and mobilisation tool."
