"People like Mitch McConnell effectively get free health care, they get paid sick leave, all things that aren't available to a lot of their constituents." International & Security Affairs Director Dr Emma Shortis unpacks why the average age in US politics seems so high @emmashor

🎀 Transcript (en) ⏱ 78s

"Why do you think so many people in US politics stay in office for so long? Well, I think there's a few reasons, Mark, but probably the primary one is that it's a really good gig. If you get yourself a Senate spot in the US, the money's good and the conditions are great. People like Mitch McConnell effectively get free healthcare, they get paid sick leave, all things that aren't available to a lot of their constituents. So once you get power like that and particularly powerful position in the Senate, I guess lots of people don't want to let go. What are some of the downsides of having so many older people as representatives in US politics? Well, I think particularly, Mark, when these figures have been in the Senate, some of them for decades, it's almost inevitable in that sense that you kind of lose touch with the people that you represent. You live a life that's completely different to most regular people and so there's that divide between representatives and their constituents. You don't have renewal, you don't have refreshment of ideas in an open playing field where voters get to choose between lots of candidates. Sometimes they will choose a Joe Biden over a younger candidate, you know, for whatever reason experience might be one of them. But I think we've got to be careful about assuming that all things are equal and young people have equal opportunity to become political representatives."

🎀 Transcript (en) ⏱ 90s

"Stocks and crypto took a brutal beating. So, here are three ways I'm protecting myself from a market crash, coming from someone who's been investing for a decade. Number one, gold and silver. Silver, and more particularly gold, are safe haven assets. Meaning, in times of volatility, chaos, high inflation, these prices tend to rise. Which is why gold has ran up 52% year-to-date and silver has run up 69% year-to-date. I've been buying up gold since the start of the year because I knew some poop was gonna hit the fan. And I even built it up to my fifth largest position in my portfolio. Number two, lending. While I'm waiting for a buying opportunity, I keep my cash working for me, earning me 7.6% on Nook. They even paid out $85 million in interest so far. Something super cool that I absolutely love is that it pays out every 16 seconds and I can withdraw it at any time, no fees or lockups. And it is technically investing, so just like your stocks and any other investments, it's not gonna be FDIC-insured. I actually had my spare cash sitting inside Nook and I pulled it out at a moment's notice once I started seeing crypto markets tanking, so I went on a buying spree. And I was only able to do that because Nook, you're able to pull it out at a moment's notice. Comment toward Nook and I'll send you a link to get it, plus a code to get an additional 1% boost. And number three, rebalancing my portfolio. I might rotate into a defensive sector such as healthcare and consumer staples. People keep buying groceries and toothpaste no matter what the market is doing. And remember, if you want to see my entire portfolio, all the stocks I own, and get alerted whenever I buy or sell anything in real time, check out the free Blossom Social app linked in my bio or comment toward stock and I'll send you a link to get it. Do me a quick favor and send this to a friend who needs to see this and follow to stay informed on how to navigate this crazy stock market."

"Now, Reform UK, Nigel Farage has been one of the biggest challenges of a public healthcare system for decades. He has spoken publicly about the need to sell off the NHS and have an insurance-based model. Now, he hasn't abandoned those views, nor have the billionaires who are investing in him. You know, he's got three billionaires at the moment fighting to see if he can give them the most money. I don't think they really are trying to preserve the NHS, and I think they'd much rather carve it up and share it amongst themselves. So it's really, really important that we continue to fight that and challenge the narratives. A couple of things that I can say that will help. Join, keep our NHS public, keep up to date with them. Read Critical by Dr. Julia, it's a fantastic book that talks about NHS privatisation. And subscribe to my channel as well, because I'm going to be doing a little bit more on it. Subscribe to my sub-stats, subscribe to my YouTube, and I'll try and keep doing it. If you've got any questions that you want to talk about specifically around the NHS, join my Patreon and we'll be able to actually talk a little bit more and unpick some of those more complex issues. But this is something that's so, so important to all of us, and it's something that we have to unite on to make sure that we defend our NHS and that we save our NHS."

"And we would not have Donald Trump as president if it weren't for Mitch McConnell. Because all Mitch McConnell would have had to do is follow traditional procedures on the court. And all Mitch McConnell would have had to do is stick to his guns regarding his assessment of Trump's culpability for January 6th and pushed ahead with that impeachment and then convicted him. Would have just taken a few votes. He was the guy who made the decision. The fact that Donald Trump is president now, that a million people have died because there's no foreign aid, and then several million more will die, that there's a war in Iran, that Ukraine has been betrayed, that nobody is getting the full support that they need on healthcare or veterans aid, that they're destroying the Department of Education, et cetera, et cetera. All the corruption, you can trace it to a decision Mitch McConnell made, not to push for Trump's conviction."

"It’s a very serious moment of life & death for people. I think that is changing some of the politics in these areas...it’s pretty simple: if you like paying a lot more & getting less from health care, then...you should like John McGuire" - @tomperriello.bsky.social bluevirginia.

🎀 Transcript (en) ⏱ 179s

"When you look at this moment, Tom, what is going through your mind? You listen to Charles and tell us that story. What's going on up there? Well, first and foremost, I mean, it's just, it's just the pain people are going through. I mean, you know, the only thing I pushed back on from one of the introductions and he covered this is that these cuts are already happening. People already feel them. We've had three rural clinics nearby closed down. That's meaning more pressure on paramedics and emergency rooms. We've had, we have seven counties out of my 24 that already have lost their last OB-GYN and we've had two of the hospitals close their labor and delivery units. So the supposedly pro-family party has basically made it impossible to be pro-family while also being against contraception in John Maguire's case. So we have two more hospitals that are at risk of imminent closure and that's getting, that's even before you just get to the cost issue that Charles talked about. People are already paying more. I'm on Obamacare for the fourth time. It's a great thing to have that default. I got certain parts of it right. I did prefer to vote for that first version that had a public option in it still before the corporate folks in the Senate took it out. But it was still supposed to be that baseline we were building from. And I do think we're seeing rural communities pay the highest price here. And I think we're seeing just a gutting of particularly pre and postnatal care access in those areas. We're seeing those premiums go through the roof. So that's even before we get to some of the horrific ICE raids we've seen in some of these counties. It's a very serious moment of life and death for people. And I think that is changing some of the politics in these areas, not maybe as quickly as we would like. But I do think people care about their families more than they care about their party affiliation. And this has become something that is really hitting at that kitchen table for folks on core questions whether they can afford to have kids, whether they can afford to retire. And I'm hearing more and more of that across the fifth. So I'm curious because Republicans have spent years talking they had a better plan and all that. We know not so much and now what's happening with the ACA. So how are you messaging, are people getting it? Is John McGuire's campaign, I mean, how are you handling it as a messenger to people about what you're gonna do? And you're obviously said it sounds like it gives you a really leg up in this race. Well, it does. And I think that there's a clear contrast. I mean, I helped get healthcare for about 35,000 people in the district. McGuire, we've already seen 35,000 or so folks lose healthcare across this area. We brought premiums down. We put premiums up. So it's pretty simple. If you like paying a lot more and getting less from healthcare, then you should like John McGuire. And yes, while they go after the poor and vulnerable and we need to protect folks on that end, people in the middle class are smart. They understand it's screwing everybody. They understand when we're not able to attract younger doctors and nurses into these communities, the employers get it because they're having trouble retaining and recruiting folks in some of these counties. The math just doesn't add up."

He came to the bank because he was unemployed with health problems and no insurance. If it's called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care, then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care. He believes prison is the best place for that and hopes he's sentenced to three years so he can continue to get free health care. First time I've ever been in trouble with the law. I said progressive policies like universal healthcare and raising the minimum wage are incredibly popular because we have an economy that isn’t working for most Americans. I was told by the host in response that universal healthcare is a β€œbear cub” that is going to kill us all.

🎀 Transcript (en) ⏱ 84s

"Look, here's what I'll say. The overall DSA label is not popular and many of the things you've listed like eliminating the U.S. Senate is not popular. However, a lot of Americans are incredibly unhappy with the economy, incredibly unhappy with money in politics. So some of these things like raising the minimum wage, universal health care, and yes, 32-hour workweek are broadly popular. Matt, I suggest you invited a grizzly bear into your home. Matt, I suggest, Malley, that you got a grizzly bear cub. It was cute. And you're telling me the 32-hour workweek and, you know, Medicare for all, that's all the grizzly bear cub wants to eat. It's so cute. Isn't that nice for all of us? You have no ability to see, even as the grizzly bear is getting bigger, that it's going to eat you. Look, well, there are legitimate economic concerns Americans have while inflation is going up and President Trump is enriching himself off the presidency, that yes, Americans would like a fairer economy and they would like money out of politics. That is something I think both Democrats and Republicans should be cognizant of, because it's not just on the Democratic side. We see a lot of these same popular influences on the right. Okay. There are legitimate issues, Deborah."

Danielle Smith & the UCP have decided that every Albertan has to put their citizenship status on their driver’s license or provincial ID. Well, here’s how that’s going for a senior in my constituency. #abpoli

🎀 Transcript (en) ⏱ 86s

"Hey, so I just got out of an interview with CTV News, telling them the story about how Daniel Smith's new policy that's forcing people to put their citizenship status on their driver's license is affecting folks in my community. So I have a constituent, she's turning 96 years old in two weeks. She needs support and help from family because she's deaf, she has extremely low mobility and a bit of dementia. So she can't go in and renew her ID alone. Her son drives out here from Kamloops to help her navigate this process. He checks in with the government of Alberta, they tell him, yeah, no problem, bring her original citizenship papers because of course, hey, she's 96, she doesn't have a current passport. So they go down to the registry, they go through all that work and effort, take her there in a wheelchair, it's difficult for her, they get there, and the registry says, no, sorry, Governor of Alberta changed the rules, your citizenship papers from when you came here to Canada from Germany, those aren't acceptable, those aren't good enough to renew your ID. So this is the example of how much challenge this is creating for Albertans. I mean, this is a solution in search of a problem and it's creating very real problems for Albertans. You think at a time when Albertans are struggling with affordability, access to healthcare, so many more important things the government could be addressing, they could choose to do something other than creating more bureaucracy and red tape that's causing headaches and problems for Albertans to access the services they need. We're going to have more to say about it in the coming days."

I spent years working to expand postpartum coverage for new moms from 60 days to a full year. Now, over 16,000 Wisconsin moms on Medicaid will get the healthcare they need and deserve this year. That's a big deal.

🎀 Transcript (en) ⏱ 122s

"Hey there folks, Governor Tony Evers here. Folks, I'm a proud dad of three kids and a grandparent to nine grandkids. But any parent can tell you that postpartum recovery takes a heck of a lot longer than 60 days. But for years, Wisconsin and Arkansas were the only two states in the nation that hadn't expanded postpartum coverage for moms on Medicaid to a full year. That's why seven years ago, when I introduced my first budget, I proposed my Healthy Moms Healthy Babies initiative, which would have expanded postpartum Medicaid coverage for new moms from 60 days to a full year. But for time and time again, partisan politics got in the way of getting it done. Well, not anymore, thanks to the fair maps I signed into law earlier this year, Wisconsin officially and finally expanded postpartum coverage for new moms on Medicaid to 12 months. And as of July 1st, we're excited that expanded coverage is now in effect. Wisconsin women and families can now get the expanded coverage they deserve, including an estimated over 16,000 moms this year alone. This is a really big deal, folks, because according to DHS, every year on average, 21 women die from pregnancy-related causes in Wisconsin, nearly half of which happened postpartum. But here's the kicker, folks, 95% of those deaths were preventable. Expanded postpartum coverage can and will save lives, simple as that. And it's especially important as Republicans out in D.C. are making it harder and more expensive for folks, including moms and babies, to get the healthcare they need. Here in Wisconsin, we're going to keep working to make sure healthcare is affordable and accessible for everyone and ensure Wisconsin women can get the healthcare they need when they need it. Thank you."

"Is a two-tiered healthcare system creeping its way into Canada? Despite the fact that the Canada Health Act says healthcare must be publicly delivered without user fees or extra billing, there are significant efforts underway to privatize healthcare across the country. The biggest example of this privatization is in-delivery, outsourcing publicly funded care to private clinics and companies. Aside from the opportunity for companies to profit, is this system actually better for patients?
